West Port was established in 2016 by Colin Cheng, Khalifa Abubakar and Shaun Ihejetoh. The founders met in 2006 while studying architecture at the Edinburgh College of Art. They were drawn together by their shared values and belief of what good, well-thought out architecture and design can achieve.
Within the studio there are a few things we value above most: good design and opening both the service and profession of architecture to many more people. We firmly believe that for architecture to truly improve the quality of our built, social and natural environments it must broaden its audience and do more to involve all members of society in its activities. It is our endeavour to develop our practice in a direction that allows us to be present, approachable, and accessible. We hold that expending energy connecting architecture with the vast diversity of people it affects can only lead to the creation of more sustainable buildings and places.
As a practice we are as excited by new work as we are by outreach opportunities. In our goal to hear more voices participating in architecture we are proactively involved in delivering drop-in workshops and Q&A sessions for members of the public. We also provide mentorship and short -term work experience opportunities for interested parties.
Alongside these programmes we are developing our EASYMADE packaged architecture service. The service aims to empower homeowners by providing greater clarity on the steps and costs involved on small projects. It is particularly suited to extensions, loft conversions and refurbishments. EASYMADE is an attempt to make architecture more affordable. Its purpose is to deliver architectural value where it is most needed on small projects. Through EASYMADE we hope to convince more people to adopt the services of an architect in whatever small a way.
Given the significant influence the shape of our settlements has on our well-being, we will always push for the best designs and work to include more voices in the place-making process.
