City of London
West Port's entry to this competition was envisioned as a truly unexpected intervention in the way it is formed and perceived. From a distance one makes out a black and grey geometric cloud (the unanticipated event) which appears to be floating low in the space. However, as you move closer to the object it slowly reveals to you its true purpose, as a place to dwell and seek refuge from the storm (insurance).
Built out of 17 curved timber pieces, finished in shades of dark grey and resting on a series of mirrored boxes, the bench sits in the urban landscape almost as though it has come from a place of fortuitousness.
