Ash Grove
Student Housing
2017-2021
One of West Port's earliest large-scale projects, Ash Grove demonstrated what is possible on a difficult site, knitting a suburban and university context. The proposed development at No. 1 & 2 Ash Grove introduces high-quality student housing through a multi-scalar design that bridges the gap between suburban residential scales and larger institutional structures. The architecture comprises three distinct blocks connected by a single-storey podium, utilising a varied 2 to-4 storey profile that responds to the site's natural south-easterly slope and existing watercourse to the south. By employing a material palette of red and buff brick with pale bronze accents, the scheme reflects the character of the Ash Grove cul-de-sac while modernising the aesthetic. Key features include a landscaped podium terrace entrance and a strategic new footbridge connecting directly to the A3 footpath, designed specifically to redirect student traffic away from the residential street and toward the University of Surrey campus.
Developed through a partnership with Brundell Property, the scheme is the result of a rigorous, context-driven methodology. West Port’s approach centres on inclusive place-making and extensive pre-application engagement, with this particular design evolving through four rounds of consultation with the local council. Their process prioritises contextual sensitivity, ensuring the development mitigates impact on neighbours through 25-meter setbacks, managed car-free tenancy agreements, and enhanced site security.
Upon planning approval the scheme was adapted, enhanced and delivered by rg+p and developers CKC, increasing the quantum, refining the design palette, and opening in 2025.
